Immortal

Nothing is truer than death. From the moment we are born, this is a fact that affects us all equally, regardless of race or social class. The passing of time is the same for everyone.

There is no need for an in-depth study of the matter to realize that the visual arts revolve around this issue. From the handprints found in caves, which remind me of the tags that flood the contemporary urban nuclei, to the portraits or statues of notable personalities, one can appreciate the human being’s vain desire to leave his mark on society.

In the representational tradition, first came the great technical and psychological development of painting and sculpture, and then came photography. After its discovery, photography became the representational tool par excellence, due mainly to its indisputable capacity to capture reality and in consequence the essence of the ephemeral. The beauty of a blooming rose or the latent youth emanating from a naked body are examples of the power that this medium holds. Today, freed of the pictorialistic stigmas that limited it in its beginnings, photography has become the preeminent medium in man’s pursuit of immortality.

For almost two decades I have been writing my name on walls. It was an act that began instinctively and carried with it a strong aesthetic and social burden. Digested and analyzed, this practice has led me to explore other means of capturing it, such as painting or photography. My project is born from this process of introspection and union of concepts.

In Immortal, I make an iconographic journey through the mundane to try to understand what may be the highest question that the human being has ever faced: death. The images that makeup Immortal are the result of visual research carried out from 2012 to 2025.
